Oil & Gas knew. Oil & Gas profited. Oil & Gas need to pay their fair share.
For decades, oil and gas companies have known that burning fossil fuels would lead to the heat waves, wildfires, droughts, and flooding we’re now facing in BC. These multinational corporations have spent millions misleading and distracting the public while making billions in profit, blocking meaningful action on climate change. It’s unfair that millionaire CEOs and investors keep profiting while we pay for the growing costs of climate damage caused by their products. We need to hold these corporations accountable, forcing them to change their business practices and pay their fair share for the harm they’ve caused.
How can we afford the rising costs of climate change? Our city’s parks and dike infrastructure are damaged beyond our budget. Provincial highways like Hwy 1, Hwy 11, and Hwy 5 have been damaged and needed repairs. Our health system is strained by heat-related and respiratory illnesses from oil and gas pollution. We’re paying more for home insurance, buying air filters for wildfire smoke, and installing AC units to survive heatwaves. The bill is big, and it’s coming due.
A class action lawsuit can make Big Oil and Gas pay their fair share. We call on the City of Abbotsford to:
“Chevron, Exxon, and Others (1990s): Companies like Exxon and Chevron actively participated in disinformation campaigns through groups like the Global Climate Coalition, aiming to cast doubt on climate science despite having internal reports that clearly indicated the environmental damage caused by their products”
